The Institution

The Sanathana Dharma Vidyasala (SDV) group of Institutions has in itself, ingrained the concept of Sanathana Dharma or Eternal Duty. It has its roots dated back to 1905 when it was founded by stalwarts led by Rao Bahadur K. A. Krishna Iyengar and Dr. S. Venkitraman Naidu, drawing inspiration from the noted theosophist Dr. Annie Besant. Thus was lit a torch, that would brighten and revolutionize education in the “Venice of The East”, Alleppey/Alappuzha, paving the way for several institutions under the SDV Label, representing  the rich tradition and aristocracy. The year 1972 witnessed a new dawn, when SDV English Medium School, with affiliation from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), started functioning, fulfilling the cherished longing of the people of Alappuzha for an Institution of Excellence in Primary and Secondary Education. With an envious and illustrious legacy inching close to half a century, SDVEMHSS is today a hallmark of Alappuzha, having churned out students who are making a mark in the society, spread across the globe and doing their Alma Mater proud.

Sanatana Sangamam

SDVCAA as a body began to take shape in July 2018, and soon proved to be much more than just a band of friends. When put to trial, it arose as a true blend of professionalism, commitment,  and an embodiment of service, even as its members are spread across the globe. When all of Kerala cried out for help, ravaged by the fury of nature that rose as the floods of August 2018,  SDVCAA members set themselves out to task. It was sheer team work that rose to the occasion to answer the distress call, before a calamity of a scale never ever witnessed in God’s own country before.

37 years after the first batch of class X passed out in 1982, the first reunion – SANATANA SANGAMAM 2019, under the initiative of SDVCAA, was held on July 27, 2019. A historic convergence, that stirred up nostalgia beyond imagination, with all the elements of a true classic. When the alumni converged to reminisce a glorious past and thank all those who had been responsible for caring, moulding and nurturing each of them, it did indeed set the ball rolling to herald a new chapter in student-school relationship. With a major chunk of students at present being children of alumni, the level of bonding is just a foregone conclusion. The event was special in every way. It was an expression of honour and gratitude to have been a part of an institution so great, one that gifted its alumni not just education, but a direction to life.

Alumni from across the globe gathered together, as in one classroom, with their beloved teachers. The day abounded with emotional moments, some of the attendees meeting each other after many years or even decades. The official start of the event was marked by the ceremonial lamp lighting by none other than Jayalekshmi miss, one of the senior-most of the beloved teachers present, along with other distinguished guests and office bearers of SDVCAA. As the teachers were called onto the stage and honoured with a ponnada, there wasn’t an eye that didn’t shed a tear of joy. Tears were also hard to hold back as the departed souls among both teachers and students were remembered and silently mourned with lighted candles. Two souls who wore a distinction were Major Mukund Varadarajan Ashoka Chakra who was martyrd fighting terrorists in Kashmir and Squadron Leader Manu Rajagopal who lost his life while in active service. The occasion was also blessed by the presence of Shri Varadarajan, father of Major Mukund, along with his extended family. As a token of love and respect a plaque was handed over to him, the whole gathering was overcome with pride and a unique sense of honour.
The event also had its lighter side with performances from the erstwhile stars among the alumni. Songs, dances and combinations literally set the stage ablaze. The show was made perhaps more wholesome by famed artiste Justin Fernandez with his mellifluous renditions of all-time favourites.
As everyone walked away at the end of the day, it was with a promise to come back, to keep coming back, to the childhood they once enjoyed in this fold.
